Independent Coffee Field Guide

Morris County Coffee Houses

A verified, client-ready survey of the independent coffee houses and small-batch roasters of Morris County — twenty-one rooms across fourteen towns, from the Mendham and Long Valley hills to the Boonton block, downtown Morristown, and Chatham’s Main Street.

Scope & Method

This is a working, verified list: locally owned coffee houses and roasters with genuine independent character, grouped by region for real-world routing.

Deliberately excluded: Starbucks, Dunkin’, Wawa, QuickChek, Panera, Paris Baguette, hotel cafés, and places that are primarily restaurants rather than coffee shops. Forum Coffee is included as a NJ-grown house-roaster despite its multiple locations, given its strong Madison and East Hanover footprint.

East Coast Organic Coffee Bar

Rockaway · Organic Coffee Bar

A genuinely distinctive organic program — locally roasted coffee, house-made nut milks, seed-oil-free, gluten-free options — that built a strong following inside the East Coast hair salon on Route 46.

Verify Before RoutingPer the shop’s own notice, the coffee bar is temporarily limited to salon customers being serviced after the landlord closed it to the public amid neighboring-business complaints. The salon and coffee bar plan to relocate to a larger standalone space nearby, targeted for October 2026, which would restore public access. Treat as not a reliable public stop until the move.

Best Use

For a polished client day, don’t attempt all twenty-one. Anchor the serious coffee on a roaster — El Monte in the west, Boonton Coffee in the northeast, T.M. Ward for heritage, or Rey Sol for Colombian family-farm — then add one concept stop (Catfight, Sunday Motor, or Sweet Vinyl), one practical work-and-eat stop (Beanbury, Roosters, or The Barn), and finish in Morristown at LOKL or General Coffee. Skip East Coast Organic until its October relocation restores public access. That sequence gives the route its full range: hill town, roastery, suburban corridor, historic Main Street, and destination downtown.

Source Notes

  1. Official shop sites for every listed stop, cross-checked against current third-party listings for hours and addresses.
  2. East Coast Organic Coffee Bar status and October 2026 relocation drawn directly from the shop’s own published notice.
  3. Roast Coffee House occupies the former SmartWorld space on South Street; SmartWorld is therefore not listed separately.
  4. Hours shift seasonally and several shops (notably the newly opened Jersey Artisan Café) are still settling — confirm live before any fixed-appointment stop.
